Cards are a relatively safe way to purchase goods and pay bills in person, over the phone or over the internet. However, card fraud does happen so it’s smart to take basic steps to protect yourself.
Memorise your PIN
Don’t keep a hard copy of it and never tell anyone what it is. It’s also a good habit to change your PIN from time to time. It’s a basic rule but very important.
Report a lost or stolen card immediately
We can cancel your card and stop any further transactions being made as soon as you give us a call and let know it is lost or stolen. This will help ensure you are not held liable for any unauthorised transactions on your card.
Destroy old cards
Make sure no one can try to use an old or unused card by cutting them into small pieces. Cut through the card numbers.
Check your monthly statement
Thieves can make a living by skimming small amounts from lots of people and hoping that it won’t be noticed. If you discover charges on your statement that aren’t yours or that you don’t recognise, let us know straight away.
Don’t let cards out of your sight
When you hand over your card for payment, keep an eye on it. It only takes a moment for your personal details to be ‘skimmed’ from your card by a dishonest person. Your details can then be used to pay for goods fraudulently. Be alert to this practice, even in reputable stores.
Check online security
When using your card for online purchases, ensure the internet site you are dealing with has high-level security and data encryption to keep your card details safe. If you are not sure about the security of a website or merchant, don’t provide your details.
Use payWave for items under $100
Visa payWave is a secure method of payment for in-person transactions. Visa payWave cards only work when the card is in very close proximity to the card reader and the payWave terminal can only process one transaction at a time. You retain control of your card during the transaction as the card doesn’t leave your hand.
