Supporting household electrification with Environment Victoria

Environment Victoria is an independent charity working to build a thriving, sustainable society that protects and values nature.

We’re proud to partner with Environment Victoria through our impact fund.

The partnership aims to accelerate household electrification across Victoria. This funding will support programs that help communities transition to efficient, all-electric homes.

More efficient, electric homes

Through this partnership, Environment Victoria will deliver programs to help make homes more liveable, healthier and more affordable. The focus is on supporting households that may face barriers to electrifying, including low-income families, renters and those living in older housing.

By switching from gas to efficient electric appliances, households can reduce energy bills, cut climate pollution, and improve indoor air quality.

Going electric for climate

Why support home electrification?

Our customers tell us climate change is one of their top concerns, and we are guided by our climate action strategy. The majority of our emissions come from our residential mortgage portfolio, so we’re focusing on supporting our customers to buy, build and retrofit efficient, electric homes.

The research is clear that electric buildings will play a critical role in Australia achieving its climate action goals.

There’s a clear opportunity to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions by electrifying our homes and buildings.

What does going electric at home mean?

Going electric at home means replacing gas appliances for heating, cooking and hot water with electric ones. Adding rooftop solar and a battery can help power your home with renewable electricity. It can also include switching to an electric vehicle.

What are the benefits of all-electric homes?

Switching to all-electric at home is better for the environment and can be better for your health and your hip pocket. Find out more.

Why is this partnership important to us?

We are focused on electrifying homes as a key part of our climate action strategy, and we want to see this work scaled across Victoria and the rest of Australia. With Victoria’s high reliance on gas, the state can play an important role in demonstrating how homes can electrify nationally.

Research from Environment Victoria shows that reducing emissions from homes is essential to Victoria reaching net zero and communities need clear information and support to make the switch. That’s why we’re proud to support Environment Victoria to deliver this work at a grassroots level.

Building on the success of the Gas-Free Victoria campaign

Environment Victoria’s program is an evolution of the successful Gas-Free Victoria campaign, which delivered important research demonstrating the cost-saving benefits of household electrification, helping build public understanding and policy momentum for an all-electric future.

The renewed partnership allows this work to expand into practical, community level support.

Electrification events across Victoria

In the first phase of the renewed partnership, Environment Victoria will collaborate with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria (NHVic) to host up to 30 community electrification information events across the state.

These events will:

  • Showcase the benefits of switching to electric appliances
  • Provide step-by-step guidance towards an electric home
  • Highlight available rebates and financial support
  • Offer tailored advice for low-income and rental households
  • Share practical tips for reducing energy bills through electrification
