Bank card basics

Before using your shiny new card for the first time, here’s how to get it ready for action. Also learn about digital cards, common questions about cards and expiring cards.

Don’t have your card yet?

It takes up to 10 days for a new card to arrive in the post. It’s less if you’re in a metropolitan area. We send the PIN separately for added security.

Some of our customers prefer to go digital and skip the plastic card option all together.

Call us if you don’t get your card or PIN, or if you’re unsure whether you ordered a physical card.

New card to-do list

1. Activate your card

You need to activate a new card before you can use it. To do so, you can do any of the following (noting replacement cards arrive already activated):

  • Log in to the app or internet banking and select ‘Services’ > ‘Activate card’

2. Change your card PIN

Log into the app or internet banking and go to ‘Card management’ – you don’t need to know your current PIN to change it here.

You can change it at a Bank Australia ATM. Once you’ve entered your current PIN, select ‘Change PIN’ and follow the prompts.

Note that we can’t change it for you on the phone, though we can talk you through it if you need us.

3. Add your card to your digital wallet

To make it easier to pay for things when you’re out and about, you may also want to add your card to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay.

Digital cards (for digital wallets)

A digital card is an instant version of a physical card. It’s for payments on devices and online.

You get it straight away when you open an account online and can start using it immediately.

How it works

To get started, add your new Bank Australia card details to the digital wallet on your mobile, smartwatch and other compatible wearables.

And for online purchases, all you need to do is enter your card number at the checkout.

Common questions about cards

Using Visa Debit cards

You can use a Visa Debit card anywhere that displays the Visa logo to withdraw cash or make payments. You can also deposit money into your account at Australia Post outlets offering Bank@Post.

Tip: Card surcharges

Merchants may include a surcharge when you use a Visa Debit card.

Multiple cardholders

Where you have additional cardholders linked to your account, they have their own card and their own PIN.

If they forget their card’s PIN, they can call us to order a new card and PIN.

Expiring cards

We send you a new card about one month before your card expires.

Your replacement card will be sent to you active – which means you can start using it straight away. Your card number, PIN and card controls stay the same.

You can keep using your current card until the end of the expiry month.

Click to Pay

Click to Pay is Visa’s payment shortcut feature. It’s a secure way to pay in one click at the checkout. To enable the feature on your Bank Australia card, log into internet banking.

Look for the Click to Pay logo on sites that accept Visa.
