We’re flying high: supporting the Australian Bird of the Year 2025

Photo journal

Together with our customers, we’re committed to protecting nature and biodiversity. Now we’re taking that love of nature to new heights by supporting Australian Bird of the Year 2025 – bringing favourite birds to the public consciousness and inspiring action to protect them.

From now until Thursday 16 October when we hear which species takes out the coveted crown—last time it was the critically endangered Swift Parrot—together we get to take a moment to recognise the unique, special and especially the threatened Australian species we all hope to keep safe.

Why birds? Why now?

We’re stepping up for birds because fun public campaigns like this also have a deeper purpose: raising awareness on important issues like habitat loss, and encouraging people to take action.

Most importantly, we’re supporting Australian Bird of the Year because our customers care deeply about protecting nature. We know this from our nature survey, in which 87% of our customers told us they want more action on biodiversity loss.

A special shout-out to our feathered neighbours

Did you know Bank Australia’s conservation reserve on Wotjobaluk Country in western Victoria is a home to the endangered South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo? These stunning birds, with their fiery tail feathers and unmistakable call, are just one of the species our customers are helping protect through long-term conservation efforts with partner organisations and in collaboration with Traditional Owners.

A Kookaburra

Our team? Obsessed with Australian Bird of the Year.

From bird-spotting walks during visits to the conservation reserve to heated debates over which bird should win this year (we’re looking at you, tawny frogmouth fans), many Bank Australia employees are very into birds.

This partnership is a chance to celebrate the birds we love, raise awareness about the threats they face, and rally support for protecting nature across the country.

A flock of Galahs

Get involved! From 6 October you can vote for your favourite Australian bird

Voting opens soon, and we want you to be part of the flock. Whether you’re a hardcore birder or just love the sound of magpies in the morning, this is your chance to help crown Australia’s Bird of the Year. Stay tuned to our blog and social media for updates, bird facts, and the chance to tell us your favourites, too.

Let’s make some noise for nature, because every bird deserves a moment in the spotlight.

Nominations are open now for the 50 shortlisted species! Do you have a feathered favourite you think deserves a spot in the limelight? Submit your nomination now >
