Our partnership with The Big Issue is part of the bank’s purpose to create a positive impact for people in our society. The Big Issue works across Australia to create job opportunities for homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people through its independent magazine. Find out how we support this powerful initiative below.
We keep vendors in their trademark yellow vests
Bank Australia has been the vendor uniform partner of The Big Issue since 2016. We supply vendors with their vests, hats, bags and lanyards that help them to stand out on the streets around the country.
Vendors buy the magazine for $3.50 and sell for $7, keeping the difference. This has a real impact, with an estimated save to the community of $25,000 per vendor each year through a reduction in their demand for social services.
“It’s inspiring to see the vendors working extremely hard to improve their lives and we know the uniforms play a big role in developing the sense of identity and belonging that makes this possible. We’re proud to be part of that.” – Damien Walsh, Bank Australia Managing Director
We help to build the financial confidence of vendors
Bank Australia runs budgeting and saving workshops with Big Issue magazine vendors across the country, providing them with useful tips to help manage their money.
Matt Stedman, The Big Issue’s vendor support manager in Adelaide said the workshops deliver a lot of useful information to support vendors in an easily digestible way.
“Bank Australia facilitated a brilliant workshop for eight of our vendors in Adelaide. He tailored each of his financial tips to the context of selling magazines on the street which meant the vendors could easily relate to what he was saying and see how it could assist their financial future.”
The workshops have been well received by vendors, with a Brisbane vendor commenting, “That for me so far has been the most informative, insightful and educational budgeting workshop I've personally been involved with attending.”
Our staff volunteer their time
Bank Australia Board members and Executive staff volunteer their time during Big Issue's Vendor Week. They join vendors on the street selling magazines to help boost sales and raise awareness of homelessness and disadvantage.
Street Soccer Program
Bank Australia staff get involved in The Big Issue's Community Street Soccer program, an initiative to promote social inclusion and personal change for participants who have faced challenges in their lives.
The Big Issue hold fortnightly breakfast events in each state to coincide with the magazine release date. Bank Australia staff help to prepare, cook and serve the breakfast while getting to know their local Big Issue vendors.
